ALM Sync Service Hanging, why?

Our HP-ALM Synchronizer service hung without sending any errors. The service was shown as running, however none of the links were working. We restarted the server and the service returned back to normal. Why is this happening?

It is a known issue with ''scaling'' of HP-synchronizer when using the HP-ALM (or HPE-ALM) link type and large numbers of linked records, links, or extremely short sync intervals.

This sometimes results in one or more ''hung-links''.
Usually, it can be remedied by cycling the HP ALM sync service, but in some cases the ACTIVE_RUNS table in Postgres needs to be cleared out in order to get things back to normal.

The interval between hung-links appears to be random, but HPE/MF recommends lengthening the time between Incremental Sync and to only do Full Sync at most once a day.
They also recommend that when creating NEW links, to use the REST link type for ALM (i.e. HP-ALM-REST or HPE-ALM-REST).

At this time there is NO WAY to convert links from HP-ALM to HP-ALM-REST link type.
