In ALM sometimes certain defects are not being emailed, the automail sends fine for most defects, but when we check the logs we see the following error or a similar error for the defects that do not get emailed.

Failed to add fields of bug #85764 to .xml Suspected field to cause the problem: [HAS_LINKAGE]

What could cause this and how can we fix this?

Oftentimes this occurs when bad characters are copied and pasted from emails and or Microsoft Word directly into defect fields such as the Defect Description and Summary. The easy way to fix this is to copy the text out of the defect description and paste it into notepad to ''cleanse'' the defect text then copy the text out of notepad and paste it back into the defect.

I see this happen often, it is a good idea to never have users paste directly into ALM from MS Word, outlook, etc. Have the users paste into notepad first to strip out anything that is not regular text then copy the text again from notepad and then paste it into ALM.
