Can’t create a new template project from existing project

We are trying to create a staging environment in order to test the customization of workflow before going to Prod. I am trying to copy and create a new project from existing project. To do that, i thought of creating a template project from existing project. However, "Create Template" project option is disabled for me. Can you please let me know why that is disabled and if that’s a licensing issue, can you please share the workaround to do the same.

You probably have an ''Enterprise'' license.
You can only create real ''Template'' projects with a Premier/ALM license.

Perhaps the term ''template'' is at issue here.

If you intend to use a project as the basis (copy for a starting point) for other projects - let's call it a ''base project'', just create a domain with a name like ''base projects'' - just to remind you that the project is for copying. You can have a series of these, but do not allow users to access them, you may want to get the group security setup ahead of time and leave users out of the group lists. If you want to setup user lists, the users will have access and could possibly start working in them, so you may want to keep them inactive.

Then you can maintain the project going forward with all of your current customizations -- but you do not use it for production, just as a base for copying.

When you need to make a NEW project, you pick the right ''base'' project, and do a ''create Project/Create a project by copying data from an existing project'', select all objects/entities, and you have a NEW project that is the same as your base.

The copied projects do not know anything about where they were created - they WILL NOT update with any new customizations seen on the BASE, that must be done manually (this is why a different, and more expensive, license is required for ''real templates'').

Thanks for your response. Our exercise is to create a new project with all the customization base project has. If I go with your suggestion, I don't think I can get new project with all the customization we have in base project. Is there any other way? Something like by exporting base project and importing it to new project?

When you do an EXPORT to QCP file, it is the same as NEW Project from existing (with ''select all'' checked for various customizations and entities.) If you go the QCP route, you keep QCP files named so you can tell them apart and import as needed for the base of various projects. The only drawback of using QCP's this way is that if you need to maintain (change) the base project that is a QCP, you need to import it, change it, then export again. If you already have a ''base'' project in your Site Admin Project tree, you only need to activate it, change it,then can copy immediately.
