Error starting Quality Center service: ”cannot initialize the Java Virtual Machine.”

I am suddenly getting an error trying to start the Quality Center service: "cannot initialize the Java Virtual Machine."

The QC service (Quality Center 10.0) tries to start but then stops before it gets completely started. The Windows event log shows the error above.

I tried re-installing Java from the Oracle (the current owners of Java) web site and rebooted but that did not help.

There are on errors in the jboss log files nor in any of the Quality Center log files. The only error I can find is in the Windows event log.

When I start Internet Explorer or Firefox and go to http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp and click on the link that says "test the currently installed version of Java", the test fails. The picture that should be on the page is not drawn. Like I said, I have re-installed java from their web site. I checked the instructions under "If you cannot see your machine info listed above, please check these additional configurations" and that is OK.

Can someone help me figure out why this won’t work? I need to get the Quality Center service running again!

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Suggest you check your CLASSPATH environment variable to see if any extra libraries/classes are in it. If there's extra stuff there, try resetting or deleting CLASSPATH (after making a note of what it was originally set to, of course!) and see if that fixes the problem.
