What can the user community expect from hp and telerik regarding QTP’s ability to detect telerik controls? I’ve successfully created work arounds, but I’m hoping for more out of the box functionality.

What version of QTP are you using? I found that there was a significant improvement between 9.2 and 10 as far as recognizing Telerik controls. Try launching QTP by ''running as Admin'' (right click on the icon) and make sure you are using the correct add-in. These two things made a huge difference for me in the way that QTP sees the objects.

Not sure which controls you are using from Telerik but most of the time I have found using the Web Extensibility SDK with the Web Accelerator you can create a custom add in to address my needs. This add in will require some jScript knowledge and some time up front but will make the effort to write and maintain scripts easier. The both tools can be loaded with QTP 10 patch QTPWEB_00047.
