How to use State field in HP ALM

Our QA folks are using HP ALM and tell me that the State field (not Status, State) is for closing (only values are Open or Closed) a defect when the Business signs off after UAT. To me, that doesn’t make much sense, since changing the value from Open to Closed forces you to also choose a "Root Cause" from a list that includes things like "User Error" and "System Configuration". It seems to me that setting the "Root Cause" is something you would do when you resolve the defect, not a month or two later when the Business has signed off on the deployment of the product. Can someone clarify this field, State, for me?

This sounds like a ''custom'' field with a custom ''workflow'' imposed by your QC Admins.
There is no ''state'' field out of the box.

They likely have business rules and incentive to make it work this way.

See if they have any additional documentation of their state-transition ''customization''.
