Why doesn’t leanFT recorder capture steps

Using leanFT 14.03 in VS2017 Windows 10. The recorder launches, I click record – left hand side of the recording tool bar flashes red – , begin executing steps in IE browser or SAP gui but nothing gets recorded. What am I doing wrong?
