Our team already worked with Selenium and tried to develop an internal tool. Later I know about Katalon via a friend. It surprised me that Katalon is free but pretty easy to use. The interface is nice, I was able to understand how the tool works and make simple test scripts quite quickly. I think the feature Drag & Drop and Mobile Record & Playback are brilliant. Besides, with Katalon, you have a choice between 3 different styles of scripting for your test case creation (recording, manual and script) which means you can choose which level of complexity suits you the most. This results in flexibility and faster script creation time. However, I still wait for Linux version if possible. Also the update documentations and tutorials for more features (especially new ones). Anyway, it's worth a try.
About the idea whether it can replace Selenium, I think it's hard to make a prediction. All we know now is Selenium is a queen and Katalon (other automation tools as well) will have to try much harder to have a firm position in the market.

What people don't realize is that Selenium is not a tool or a framework. It is an API, that you can use with your own framework, from open source frameworks like JUnit / TestNG (sticking to java based examples but not forgetting all other language bindings), or third-party frameworks like Katalon (yes - Katalon, and pretty much all other shiny frameworks uses Selenium to drive the browser - that's the only reason they are offered for free).

With the background, now trying to answer the question more directly. Which one is better is not a question that can be answered without the addendum of 'for what purpose'. If your target is to get a test bed set up quickly and you have no framework available, Katalon is your best bet. If your organization has a decent framework built over Selenium, go for that. If your target is to learn test automation, forget Katalon or Selenium - just focus on learning programming first.
